In the piercing silence

your presence is unmistakable

and unflinching

But the silence. . .

What I would give for just one more

I love you

The longer the sound of it breaks away

like the waves would

from my passenger side window

along the California coastline,

the greater the longing for sand

I turned away from you for a second

(a second)

and blinked to my foot on the pedal

I long for the ocean

as if there I could 

hear you

Yet every time I have the urge

I can't seem to break my hands away

from the wheel

Pressing on

without you

never alone, still

it's so very 

quiet
