My Living Wish

If I die
and you should feel so inclined
to attend my funeral,
do not wear black.
I repeat, do NOT wear black.
If outside the winds howl mean,
snow-dust cakes the sidewalk,
and storm clouds stamp out the very sun,
I'd better still see pastels and pretty florals
beneath your winter coat.

Forget the "supposed to" of tradition,
make it a party!
Play all of my favorite music.
Hang streamers from every corner and
tape balloons to the walls
like the birthday parties of my youth.
Eat cake.
Play card games until dawn.
Look through old pictures, sing loudly, and
laugh at all of the stupid shit I've done.

And dance.
Y'all motherfunkers better dance.

Hug my Anastasia frequently.
She was already born resilient and bright,
remind her if she forgets.
Our bond is unshakable, and wherever it is I will go
I know I will still be with her.
I know she will feel me in her heart.
But we hug a lot,
so hold her close as often as need be.
Remind her to rejoice in what we have been given.

Don't mourn me, because I live forever!
Say a prayer for my safe passage and move on quickly.
Celebrate yourself everyday.
In this way, you celebrate me.
     Write poetry.
Dance like nobody's watching while EVERYONE is watching.
Step outside of your comfort zone,
TRY!
Believe in the best within people.
When a complaint finds you,
thank God for the ability to complain.
Practice gratitude until it is a reflex
for every dark moment.

This is how I want to be remembered:
in the small acts you already do
and in the ones you hadn't imagined could be done.

This is not a poem.
This is my last will and testament.
There are no heirlooms for the passing,
no assets to duel for.
All I have to give is my love, my voice.
That is why I write, sing, whisper and shout
my truth.
I want to remind you of your courage to find your own.

My dying wish is for us all to truly live
while we are here.

If I die tonight
I want you to know
that I love you
just as you are.
