Although I’m not generally math-oriented, I was looking for a go-to formula for those phases in life when I eat out more and workout less or lose my patience more often than I can seem to find compassion. I was hoping to discover an equation for success, so I thought back on how I’ve achieved my personal goals in the past to find an answer. After several minutes of thorough research, I’ve concluded the top three ways to stay motivated:
- Do it.
- Do it again.
- See step one.
That’s right, that’s all there is to it. Just fucking do it.
There is a plethora of self-help advice out there with techniques on how to keep positive and stay driven, and I’m sure they’re all beneficial, but the only thing that really matters is practice. Until the bad habit is broken, it takes forcing yourself to make better choices. I hate to break the news but you’re NEVER going to ALWAYS want to get out of bed at 5am and run those miles. Shit is not easy, which is why most of us yo-yo a bit and that’s okay. In fact, I’d say that’s part of the process.
So much goes into what works and what doesn’t, especially environmental factors. Getting laid off, losing a loved one, and health problems can all throw a wrench in the routines we work hard to cultivate. The most important thing to remember when faced with a setback is to acknowledge it as a part of the flow that is your wonderful life and try again. Again and again and again. And I mean really try.
Funny thing is, as I type this, I am realizing that the first step is not to just do it after all, it is to love yourself. Because if you cannot love yourself, you will not care if you half-ass your way through life. You will not try hard enough and you will be way too hard on yourself when things inevitably go astray.
Truth is, there is more than one way to achieve your goals and it will never look the same way twice. There is only one thing you can do to stay driven. Love yourself and never ever give up.
